Christchurch children enjoy tea at the Savoy, with Anton Edelmann
Students from Christchurch Schools enjoyed an extra special day out in London during the summer holidays following an invitation by top chef Anton Edelmann. After enjoying copious amounts of delicious sandwiches, scones and dainty cakes, the winners were shown the intricacies of the Savoy kitchens and Private dining rooms, visiting the rooms often frequented by Prime Ministers and the Royal family.
The competition was held as part of the Christchurch Food and Wine Festival and organised by Christchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce. Pupils were asked to design and cook a recipe for four people costing £5, which could be sold on the High Street. Apart from winning the special tea in London, winners also received book tokens from Bookends in Christchurch and a selection of cookware for their school. Top chef Lesley Waters also donated copies of her Pasta book to each winner.
The winners Ewan Gibson and Danielle Cattanach from Twynham School and Holly Croucher from Homefield school were accompanied by their teachers and Mary Reader the Food Festival organiser. Mrs Eileen Bonar, Head of Food Studies at Twynham School said "We really find this competition fits in so well into our Design and Technology curriculum and the students enjoy the opportunity of being judged by chefs. This year they were David Ryan from the Bistro on the Bridge and Chamber President Tim Lloyd from Splinters restaurant. Both restaurants support the schools in Christchurch and give invaluable help to our pupils".
Miss Jane Lawley from Homefield School added "This is the second year that we have won a place in the final and we particularly value the chance to visit the Savoy and look behind the scenes. Our students have learned so much from this experience and we too have used the competition as a valuable part of our food studies teaching". Meanwhile plans for next year's Festival are well under way, with a workshop for Christchurch cafes, pubs and restaurants planned for 21 September at the Kings Arms Hotel.
