ROAD CLOSURE... Bridge / Castle Street gas works are making good progress but Waterloo Bridge is still closed to through traffic untill February 20th! ____________Access to premises and shops either side of Waterloo Bridge is still available. ____Go via Stony Lane for the Civic Offices, South Coast Marine, Tool Store, Christchurch Power Tools, Christchurch Interiors, La Mamma etc... Go via High Street for Cheshire Robbins, Masala Bay, Filer Knapper, Williams Thompson and all Castle St shops. ____________STANPIT... is now open again - take care as the traffic calming pinch points have been narrowed and it is now more difficult for large vehicles to return to the correct side of the road. ____________Due to the economic climate, Christopher Mark Hairdressers have had to cease trading. ____________The YMCA have opened a shop in Saxon Square. ____________

CLOSED ROADS... AND MINDS

Bridge Street and Castle Street
will be closed from 11th January 2010 for six weeks for important inspection of Waterloo Bridge, for the installation of a new gas main and for electric cable laying. The Council insist that by combining these three activities, disruption will be minimised. At meetings on the 7th and 15th December, traders made a series of suggestions that the Local Authority could do to help.

Despite fine words, the Councils have decided to take little action:

Provide a shuttle from Bargates to Wick Lane.... “Not a good use of public money”

Temporary Traffic Lights at Fountain Roundabout... “No way” (County Council)

Use the Dial-a-bus... “Bus not owned by the Borough Council”

Move the Monday Market to keep High St open... “No, the Market is so important”

Free Car Parking... “ Wouldn’t achieve anything”

Ease on-street parking restrictions... “Not a real issue”

Bus stop behind Somerfield... “No - it was looked at before”

Traffic Modelling... “We don’t do that”

TIMES FOR CELEBRATIONS

The 2010 Christchurch Community Celebration will be held on Saturday the 29th May.
The purpose of this event is to provide a stage upon which people can share in what is going on in the town. This could be your opportunity to make the public aware of the vast range of business activity which takes place in the Borough, be that manufacturing, retail or services. The whole point of the event is literally to celebrate Christchurch and shopkeepers may want to express this in their own ways in order to entice people in.
There will be stalls and workshops which will appeal to both young and old. The event will be fun, colourful and will provide an opportunity for Christchurch to blow its own trumpet!
The Chamber is considering taking a ‘stall’ on which you will be able to advertise your business - if you would like to take part, give us a call.

And don’t forget that the Food & Wine Festival takes place from the 7th to the 16th May this year.  With a multitude of mouth-watering events in Christchurch’s restaurants, pubs and hotels and the fabulous International Food Market on the weekend of 8/9 May, this is an opportunity to do something extra special to attract customers.
